How it's calculated

The 50/30/20 rule is a starting point: 50% needs, 30% wants and 20% savings or debt. You can change the percentages; savings is whatever is left up to 100%.

The emergency fund is calculated as 3 months of your needs. After the fund, the suggested order is: expensive debt, goal-based savings, and only then investing.

Watch out for this

  • If your needs go over 50%, adjust the percentage to your reality: what matters is that savings stays above zero.
  • If your income varies, use the average of the last 6 months as your pay.

Is it a mandatory rule?

No. It's a guide to get started. What matters is that you spend less than you earn and that your saving is consistent.
